This program is designed to empower participants to be more aware of freshwater systems in Georgia through engaging hikes and hands-on activities in our parks. Children will observe and identify local flora and fauna, learn to advocate for clean waterways, conservation efforts and data collection. Any scout groups that book this program will complete various badges with our Environmental Educators.

Please Note
- Minimum age requirement for Scouting out Conservation, unless otherwise specified (i.e. middle school, adult) is 5 years old.
- Large groups should have a 1 to 10 adult to child ratio at minimum.
- Groups under the size of 15 may not purchase tickets for Scouting out Conservation.
- Are we required to attend both the sleepover and program?
No, you can do one or both! For more information, visit Sleep Under the Sea.
- Are your staff merit badge counselors?
Yes, our staff at the site are merit badge counselors, are certified and able to give badges.
- Do I have to be a Scout to sign up for this program?
No, however these programs are designed so that individuals are able to achieve a badge at the end! If you would like to have any special accommodations or add something to the program, feel free to let us know.
- Do we need to have our entire troop present to attend?
No, not necessarily. We do however require a 15 person minimum for these programs to run. This 15 does include both siblings and adults.
- Does completing this program guarantee that my Scout receives their badge at the end?
No, some of the badges require extra activities to be completed before or after the lesson. Additionally, Georgia Aquarium does not provide physical badges, but certificates of completion to collect badges.
- How do I get to the hiking area?
We have provided a map of Sope Creek! Parking is $5 if you choose to stay and hike while your Scout is there or if you are staying to participate in the program. Carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited.
- How long is the program?
This program will run from 9:00am -12:00pm, approximately 3 hours.
- How many adults will be present? Can I join?
There will be two staff members per group. We do require a minimum of one additional adult present from the group, such as a troop leader. And yes, you may join as long as you purchase a ticket!
- Is food and drink provided?
No, there will be no food or drink provided. Scouts are encouraged to bring their own snack if needed and their own bottle of water.
- Is parking guaranteed with program purchase?
No, parking is on a first come, first served basis and is open to the general public.
- Is the hike difficult or is the terrain challenging?
The hike is fairly easy to navigate and the terrain gently slopes. Please be aware that conditions may not be suitable for everyone.
- Is there a maximum group size?
Yes, we can host up to a total of 90 adults and scouts. Parking is limited, so please plan accordingly.
- Is there a water fountain?
No, there is not a water fountain. We ask that all Scouts bring a water bottle and prefer that it is a reusable water bottle.
- What happens if my Scout gets an injury while hiking?
All of the Georgia Aquarium staff are CPR and First Aid certified so they will be able to assess the injury and provide care, or call for outside care if needed.
- What is the minimum/maximum age allowed on a program?
- Minimum Age – 5 years old
- Maximum Age – There is none! Please note that there will hiking and other physical activities involved.
- What should my Scout bring?
We have attached a packing list for all parents and troop leaders! Be sure to look through the provided list and make sure your Scouts have everything they may need.
- Will my Scout have access to a restroom while hiking?
Unfortunately there are no bathrooms on the trail. These lessons are to prepare scouts for future outdoor activities, which may involve using the bathroom in the wild. We encourage scouts to bring toilet paper/hand sanitizer and instructors will have trowels if needed.
